LOCAL MOTORISTS face major disruption over the next few weeks.

Penistone town centre and the main A628 in Thurlstone will both see works carried out. The work to install new electricity cables in Penistone town centre is due to restart on Monday.

That work by Northern Powergrid and its contractor O'Conner Utilities Limited, is expected to last for four weeks.

The town centre work has been on hold whilst working terms were agreed with Barnsley Council. These works, which have been ongoing since February last year form part of a £2m investment in Penistone's electrical infrastructure.

The installation of high and low voltage cables will start at the junction of High Street and The Surgery. Roads affected include High Street, Market Street, St Mary's Street and Back Lane.

There will be no diversions in place, but two way traffic lights will be in operation.

Northern Power says they will try, wherever possible, to work around business opening times.

At the same time, major resurfacing works are to be carried out by Barnsley Council on the A628 Manchester Road between the river Don bridge and St Saviour's church in Thurlstone.

It is expected to take two weeks to resurface the road and pavements. The work will be carried out using traffic signals.
