A MAJOR employer in Wombwell has gone into administration, with the loss of 134 jobs.
Galglass, on Hough Lane, went into administration last Thursday. Only a skeleton staff of 11 workers remains on site this week as administrators Duff and Phelps took over its affairs.
The firm, which makes galvanised steel tanks, has been established since 1979. A number of directorships have been terminated in recent months, including managing director Nick Stringer.
Coun Margaret Morgan said Galglass going into administration had come as a 'huge shock'.
"It was only a few months ago they bought two adjacent houses as they needed extra office space, which to me implied it was a growing firm.
"I'm very sad to hear about this, as we need as many jobs as we can possibly have."
A spokesman for Duff and Phelps, confirmed it appointed Keith Marshall and David Whitehouse joint administrators to Galglass.
He said: "Unfortunately, the business and assets could not be sold as a going concern and 134 redundancies were made. The 11 remaining employees are assisting the joint administrators to identify and realise the assets belonging to Galglass."
