FANS of the 1970s might just turn green, beige and possibly yellow with envy for this groovy caravan.

It has been donated to a Barnsley charity after an appeal was put out on social media to help it find a mobile home from the ‘70s that can be used as a ‘reminiscence’ room for people with dementia.

Linda Pattison, from Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support, said the 1979 caravan was donated by a family from Rotherham and the charity has big ideas for the little home on wheels.

True to the designs of that decade, the inside is already decked out in dark wood panelling and has a charming brown flowered fitted sofa. But there are plans to really glam it up with more furnishings from that era with a 70s ‘wish list’ being drawn up for people to donate their unwanted items such as curtains and a record player.

Linda said: “It’s a bit of a derelict caravan but we’re planning to turn it into a reminiscence caravan. We are looking at having some 70s wall paper and some upholstery and curtains.

“A lot of the members we have now were growing up in the 60s and 70s and it’s about bringing back memories with the old fabrics and old records. It’s almost like stepping back in time to a time they can associate with. We will also have various resources.

“It will be a bit like therapy.”

The idea has been in the pipeline for a while but space has been an issue.

Linda said: “We’ve been talking about a reminiscence room for a long time but it was a case of where to put it.

“We came up with the idea of the caravan. It was mentioned at a meeting on a Thursday and by the following Monday we had it on site.”
