THE MiCard discount travel scheme for young people has been saved but the cost per journey is to increase by 10p.

Ruling cabinet members are expected to give the move approval today, with it due to take effect on June 1.

MiCard currently allows those up to 18 to travel on buses for 30p, including weekends.

The report says MiCard will continue to be available to young people up to the age of 18 who live in Barnsley and the 40p fare applies to bus journeys within Barnsley as well between Barnsley and the rest of South Yorkshire.

For trips in South Yorkshire the usual concessionary child fare will apply, which has been agreed to stay at 70p in 2014/15.

Council papers state: "However, members should be aware that the main bus operator (Stagecoach) has identified the potential risk of a reduction in child patronage at non-education times.

"The latest data shows the current scheme had led to an overall decrease in child travel with a most pronounced decrease after school and evening journeys.

"In the event that this arises, the scheme can be terminated giving three months' notice."
