THE MINISTRY of Defence is awaiting DNA test results to determine if a Wombwell man is among the remains of 15 World War One discovered in France in 2009.

Lance Corporal 8116 Larrett Roebuck, who was born in Wombwell in 1889, appears on a list of soldiers' names from the York and Lancaster Regiment who were killed at Beaucamps-Ligny in October 1914 and have no known grave.

The list identifies Lance Corporal Roebuck as the son of Elias and Elisabeth Bailey Roebuck who enlisted on November 14, 1904 in Pontefract aged 15.

He was a professional footballer with Huddersfield Town before the war and was possibly a drummer who served in India. He was married with four children.

His remains has never been found and there is a chance he could be one of the 15 soldiers found in France.

Ten have already been identified after their surviving relatives provided DNA samples.

A spokesman for the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency, which carried out the DNA analysis, confirmed it had spoken to the family of Lance Corporal Roebuck and is awaiting DNA test results.

Defence minister, Lord Astor of Hever, said: "Although these soldiers fell almost a century ago, the Ministry of Defence still takes its responsibility extremely seriously to identify any remains found, trace and inform surviving relatives and to provide a fitting and dignified funeral so they rest in peace."
