MORE than £100,000 is being invested in Monk Bretton to reach out to 'disengaged' youngsters socialising on street corners and in parks.
The three year Lottery-funded project builds on successful street-based youth work projects that have been delivered in the village since 2009.
It will be led by the Youth Association which has been commissioned to help young people learn new skills through healthy activities and develop employment prospects through local volunteering.
Street-based youth work will be delivered weekly by the association, focusing on youth-related issues, with the aim of improving relations between young people, businesses and the community.
Dmitry Fedotov, senior youth worker at the association, said: "We believe the methods and values of youth work make it one of the most effective ways of engaging young people in a positive way.
"Detached youth work is designed to remove the obstacle of lacking provision for 13 to 19-year-olds in places like Monk Bretton, where young people have no youth club or similar space and socialise outdoors."
Sir Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council, welcomed the £106,162 investment.
"The Youth Association has worked in Monk Bretton over a number of years and has had a number of hugely successful projects which we hope can continue in future."
