A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man who was shot at his home in Wath last month.

Tyrone Woodhead, 42, of Doncaster Road, died on Wednesday following the 'targeted attack' on September 20.

He had spent the last month in hospital.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but charges for both men are likely to change in the next few days, police said.

A spokesman for Longley's coal merchants, where Mr Woodhead had worked for about ten years, said they were saddened to hear of this death and were thinking of his wife, daughter and family.

The spokesman added: "It's a sad day and a big loss, not just for us but for everyone.

"We are all really upset.

"He was such a character, he kept us going every day, he would always come running up the steps with a big smile on his face.

"He was larger than life and would help anyone."

Mr Woodhead was given a bravery award in 2007 for helping a woman who was killed the previous year.

He risked his life in an attempt to save the woman, who was being attacked in the street in Wath by her ex-partner.

Mr Woodhead helped restrain the man until police arrived, but the woman later died.

A close friend, who did not wish to be named, said: "They are a close family, family life was everything. He was 42 years old - it's a waste."

Stephen Barry Rodgers, 29, of Thurnscoe, arrested and charged last Saturday after being located in Southport, Merseyside.

He appeared at Rotherham Magistrates' Court on Monday, where he was also charged with robbery and remanded in police custody.

He is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday.

Nathan Wingfield, 22, of Thurnscoe, was charged with attempted murder, robbery, and aggravated burglary last month and remanded in custody.

His charges relate to three separate incidents: attempted murder for the shooting, robbery for a separate incident in Wath on September 20 and aggravated burglary for an incident in Bentley, Doncaster.
