Just call him the 'snow shifter'.

Dale Riches has used his farming background and engineering know-how to build a machine that can clear roads and side streets where large ploughs and gritting machines cannot reach.

Dale, 24, of Burnsall Grove, Stairfoot, bought an old Landrover Discovery which he modified for the job by fitting a plough to the front to cut through deep snow.

He approached Barnsley Council with the idea and has been enlisted by the authority to help clear streets and side roads during heavy snowfall.

He is now in talks with local supermarkets about using the machine to clear car parks.

The snow-clearing device cost him about £4000 to buy the car and plough, fit and insure it and Dale is '100 per cent' confident it is up to the job.
