RABBIT owners are being warned to vaccinate their fluffy friends following reports of the fatal virus myxomatosis being recorded in Brierley.

On Monday evening MyxomatosisNow tweeted: "Infected rabbits with Myxomatosis in Brierley, Near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Please take ill ones to the vet and vaccinate pet rabbits."

Myxomatosis is a man-made disease to control the wild rabbit population.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "Myxomatosis is a virus spread by fleas, mites and biting flies.

"The early symptoms include puffy swellings around face, ears and eyes which can cause blindness. This swelling then spreads in the later stages.

"There is no specific treatment for the disease and recovery is usually very rare."
