BARNSLEY town centre has had a £9m boost with the announcement that a nine-screen cinema is to be built in the Alhambra Centre.

Alongside the multiplex will be seven new restaurants, many of which will be from famous popular chains.

The investment is by F & C Reit - a company which operates several shopping centres across the country, including the Alhambra.

Sir Steve Houghton, council leader, said: "Schemes such as this will help us create the successful town centre we are looking for and is a boost towards our own plans."

The aim is for work to start in April 2015 with a view to open in spring 2016.
