PLANNING permission has been granted to demolish the Barnsley library building and adjacent shops and offices to build a new £17m 1,200-student sixth form college.
Planning officers said the proposals had met all the relevant requirements and councillors voted in favour of granting permission.
The new building's architectural features will include stone work in keeping to the adjacent town hall, brass cladding, and large glass sections allowing light to pass all the way through the building.
An application had earlier been made to English Heritage to grant the library 'listed building' status, which would have prevented its demolition. The application was turned down as the library was not deemed to have 'special architectural or historic interest.
