PLAY equipment in Pilley Pocket Park is being scrapped before it is condemned on safety grounds.
The park has swings and equipment including a 'trim trail' - a commando style timber agility trail - as well as newer features such as an aerial runway and climbing frame. But some of the equipment is 22 years old.
Barnsley Council's parks department is now working with Tankersley parish council on an overhaul which will have to be funded by grant money from sources such as area partnerships.
Barnsley Council parks officer Jo Birch warned the parish council: "If we take out a piece of equipment we just haven't got any money to replace it. Once it's done it's done."
The trim trail is constantly sitting in a puddle of water and needs to be taken out and the ground made good and grassed.
Jo said: "The trim trail is at the end of its life span. There will be an annual inspection by an external inspector in September but we need to do something about it before the summer holidays. Some drastic action needs to be taken."
The swings, she said, were already second-hand when they were brought into the park and the parish needed to decide whether to refurbish or replace them.
The cost to replace them would be around £5,500 and the cost for a new trim trail would be £5,000 to £6,000.
Members agreed to get rid of the 'trim trail,' look at grant funding to refurbish or replace the existing swings and buy more equipment, and possibly relocate the swings.
