A rural hotspot, known for dogging, is being targeted by police following complaints about naked gay men seen 'frolicking' in woodland at West Bretton.

Village councillors have asked police to step up patrols in the Green Lane area after they received reports from the public about naked men spotted in woods near the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The problem was raised at a parish council meeting this month, which was chaired by Coun Mike Hofton.

"It's an area a lot of people pass through for dog walking because there is a back entrance to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park," he said.

"It's a well-used pathway. It's quite secluded but you can get vehicles down there.

"At various times for the last three to four years now people have reported there has been adult activities going off in the the woods and reports of naked men in there.

"It quietened down for a while and recently restarted again."

Coun Hofton said the secluded area wasn't just attracting gay men but also heterosexual couples. He put the spike in activity down to the warm weather.

"Some people have said it is gay people and some have said it is couples," he said.

"The police were informed and have said they are going to try and concentrate on that area, and are starting mounted patrols."
