Barnsley could sign another striker this month after bringing in German frontman Nick Proschwitz on loan from Hull City until the end of the season.
The 27-year-old joined Hull for £2.5million at the start of last season and helped them to promotion to the Premier League. He scored six goals in 31 games last season but has played just two top flight matches this season while scoring twice in four cup games.
The Chronicle understands that he was one of three strikers on Barnsley's short-list and that one of the other two could join him next week. Manager Danny Wilson said of Proschwitz: "His experience is something that will help us now, rather than getting a younger player in, and he is someone who will be able to hit the ground running. I think Nick and Chris (O'Grady) will be able to feed off each other quite well. He is a player that does like to score, he can get into the box well and he is a good finisher. "Nick seems very positive and he is not fazed by the position we find ourselves in. In fact it's quite the opposite, he feels very confident he can get the goals that will help us out."
Proschwitz played reserve football in Germany before making his name in Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the German second tier then earning the move to the KC Stadium.
Another Barnsley target, Billy Sharp, has now joined Doncaster after the Reds agreed terms with his parent Southampton but the striker did not want to come to Oakwell.
As for players leaving the club, the Reds are keen to move Kelvin Etuhu on. The most likely outcome for the central midfielder is a loan until the end of the season but he could be released or sold. Young defender Andrai Jones is also close to moving on and League Two Morecambe have asked to take him on trial. Wilson said: "We are looking to get a few more of the fringe players out."
