PLANS to demolish a popular Barnsley pub and replace it with a supermarket will go before the council's planning committee on Tuesday.

Punch Partnership, the owners of The King's Head in Mapplewell, have made the application.

And the company say it plans to close the pub even if the application to redevelop the site is rejected.

But many local people are opposed to the plan.

A petition signed by 974 local people has been received by the council along with nine letters of objection.

Coun Roy Miller has also objected to the plans because it will lead to problems with highway safety.

He said: "I am not opposed to new developments but I feel the proposed site is inappropriate. The plan, if granted, will lead to traffic problems on Kingsway."
