Luke Steele, Bobby Hassell and Reuben Noble-Lazarus are all in negotiations with Barnsley over new contracts.

Manager David Flitcroft says he has been too busy with recruitment of new players to discuss new deals with the trio but the Chronicle understands that general manager Don Rowing has begun preliminary negotiations.

Flitcroft said: “Once we get our new signings sorted out then we might look at contracts. But it is difficult because we don’t know if we will be a Championship club or a League One club next season.

"Bobby Hassell and Luke Steele have been incredible professionals. They have knuckled down and they fit into what we’re doing. Luke Steele has been performing really well and Bobby is guiding the young lads.

“It has taken Reuben 16 months to get  somewhere near to where we think he should be. It has genuinely taken him that long to realise that every day is a challenge and a work day and an improvement day. Reuben was coming in and giving half a day but now he is in a good place.

“The attraction of staying here would be to grow up in this team with his friends.“If we get that then we have got a really strong core.”
