A CLEAN-UP operation’s success in Goldthorpe will see more multi-agency action days organised in the coming months to boost its appearance.

South Yorkshire Police worked with Barnsley Council in the centre of the town on Tuesday, where officers targeted untidy areas including the back of premises on Doncaster Road.

A skip was provided by the council, while nearby residents and businesses were encouraged to dispose of any waste legally instead of dumping.

Complaints about fly-tipping and the town’s unattractive appearance were made to PC Amy Mellor, who is based at Goldthorpe station, during her walkabouts.

“That’s where the idea for more tidy-up days came from,” PC Mellor told the Chronicle. “Residents and businesses wanted that to happen.

“There’s still a lot to do but Tuesday was the first event and there will be many more in the future.

“Doncaster Road is a big concern due to the amount of dumping, graffiti and general antisocial behaviour there is, so that was our first stop-off.

“Other areas will be targeted across Goldthorpe at further events due to the pilot day’s success.”
