PUPILS were left in the lurch after a bus company taking them to and from school suddenly stopped trading.

The Redline bus service was suddenly suspended earlier this month, causing travel turmoil for students living in the Brierley, Shafton, Cudworth and Grimethorpe areas.

Students at Shafton ALC and Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy were among those affected.

However, Stagecoach Yorkshire stepped in to add extra services and increase capacity.

John Young, acting commercial director for Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: "We were made aware that some students had effectively been left stranded and responded rapidly.

"We surveyed the areas affected and went out to speak to the schools to work with them to ensure a smooth transition."

The morning and afternoon school service was reinstated by Stagecoach, and extra journeys added on the Pontefract Road services 29A from Shafton and 32 to and from Cudworth to ensure that all regular customers had access to services.

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach Yorkshire said she did not know what had happened to Redline.
