A FORMER school site at Birdwell will be sold for £250,000 once consent has been given by the Secretary of State.
St Mary's Church of England primary school, on Worsbrough Road, was closed in December 2007 and has remained vacant and unused since.
The ownership of the former school site is split between the council and the Sheffield Diocese.
The diocese owns the former school buildings while the council owns the remaining part of the school site, which consists of hard and soft surfaced play areas and a car park.
Council papers say because the site is within a green belt area, this limits its development potential.
However, following informal discussions with the council's planning officers, it was decided that combining the two sites would give more potential for an overall development.
It was agreed the council and the diocese would enter in to a joint marketing and disposal exercise with a view to disposing of both sites as one.
It was also agreed any profit from the sale would be split 65/35 in favour of the diocese.
An offer of £250,000 has been received for the whole site and the council's share of this would be £87,500, although there is no indication of what type of development there would be.
Council papers show if it were to hold on to the land, it would continue to be a long-term maintenance liability in terms of costs incurred through grass-cutting and hedge trimming.
Papers state: "The development of the site, subject to planning permission, will remove a redundant empty former school site, which if left in its current state could be a focal point for antisocial behaviour, which will not be good for the residents of this mainly residential area."
