DARFIELD was identified as a natural choice to base the seventh food bank in Barnsley.

Based at the Wesley Church on Barnsley Road, the food bank opened its doors to the needy on Tuesday.

The bank is being run by volunteers from the three churches in Darfield and is a branch of the Barnsley Food Bank Partnership.

Rev Mick Neal stressed the food bank will act as a short-term solution for people and families that are struggling.

"I think in all cases the people that go to food banks are desperate," he said.

"A food bank is to help somebody through a crisis and they can find themselves in one for all sorts of reasons."

A food bank is already based at the Salvation Army in Wombwell but Darfield was viewed by the Barnsley Food Bank partnership as another area in need.
