Barnsley produced a good performance at high-flying Huddersfield YMCA but lost 42-30 and fell to the bottom of the league, ten points adrift of safety.

 

The Shaw Laners scored five tries at Huddersfield who are second in Yorkshire Division One but conceded six. This gave Barnsley a bonus point but Knottingley picked up two bonus points despite a loss at Ilkely and moved off the bottom and ahead of the town team. Old Brodleians won 21-20 at Heath and are now ten points clear of Barnsley.

 

Joe Taylor put the Shaw Laners ahead at YMCA on Saturday with an unconverted try but the hosts raced into a 18-5 lead. Paddy Jensen scored a penalty for Barnsley and Greg Colbridge went over for their second try. Huddersfield touched down again but Neil Francis replied for the Shaw Laners on the stroke of half-time to make it 23-18 to the home team.

 

Barnsley took the lead and a four-try bonus point early in the second half when captain Dave Reed scored an unconverted try but the home side fought back with three tries to make it 42-25.

 

Ed Norris scored a late consolation try to make the final score 42-30.
