SILKSTONE Waggonway will be put on the national map thanks to the creation of a new guided walk as part of an initiative run by the Royal Geographical Society.

'Discovering Britain' tells the stories of the country's landscapes through specially-selected routes.

London-based Dr Jenny Lunn, who runs the project, visited the village on Tuesday to gather information to accompany a walk of three to four miles along the waggonway, called 'Seams of Black Gold'.

A step-by-step guide and audio commentary will be now be created before being made available as a free download from the society's website in the next few months.

The waggonway, a former horse-drawn railway, was built in 1809 and used to transport coal.
