THE Friends of Wilthorpe Park group has bought a wooden train for young visitors to enjoy.

It has been paid for through funding the group won from the Tesco ‘bags of help’ grant scheme, where money raised from sales of carrier bags is used to fund of local projects in communities.

Chairman Pat Braithwaite said it won the top award available - £4,000 - and to say thank you to the supermarket it has named the train ‘The Tesco Express’, the name used by Tesco for its local convenience stores.

Pat added: “We’re hoping to get some more funding in the future for two little carriages.”

Up until couple of years ago, Wilthorpe Park was an unloved and underused space.

But with a little hard work and determination by the Friends, it now boasts a children’s play area, planted beds, benches and hosts a range of community events.

The wooden train was unveiled on Monday and Pat said the new play equipment is a real boost for that part of the park which already has other activity panels such as a garage and shop, and a cycle path where children can learn to ride their bikes and learn road safety.
