FITNESS fans in Barnsley are being warned to be on their guard after a pre-work out supplement on sale in a local gym was found to be illegal and dangerous.

Food standards officers at Barnsley Council are issuing a warning to people who use pre-workout supplements which claimed to improve performance and burn fat.

Analytical testing of products bought from local gyms revealed that one of the supplements, on sale in just one local gym, "Muscle Junkie Psycho Pre-workout" contained DMAA (1,3-dimethylamine) a stimulant which has been linked with high blood pressure, nausea, cerebral haemorrhage, strokes and even death.

The Muscle Junkie product has now been removed from sale all over the country.

Food standards field officer Sarah Tudor said: "We want to ensure anyone who may have a large stockpile of this supplement does not take it.

"We have checked it is not on sale any more, but we are warning anyone who may have some at home-- do not take it."

People who come across any product they think may contain DMAA should contact Regulatory Services on 772468.
