Barnsley played 35 minutes with ten men as they claimed a heroic 1-0 home win over Bristol City after club captain Bobby Hassell was shown a red card.

The Reds have won both of their home games by the same scoreline after Jacob Mellis scored the winning goal early in the second half.

But one minute later Hassell was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Jon Stead. Barnsley then produced an outstanding defensive performance to keep out a Bristol side who had scored eight goals in their last two league games.

City substitute Steve Davies missed two superb headed chances then hit the bar with a free-kick. Barnsley's young star John Stones saved off the line from Martyn Woolford.

Barnsley had chances of their own with ten men as Marlon Harewood forced a good save from Tom Heaton and had an effort cleared off the line.

But in the end the Reds only needed one goal. It came via the head of Mellis from an excellent cross by home debutant Martin Cranie following some superb work by Craig Davies.

After a nervous start, Barnsley had dominated the match and almost opened the scoring in the first half when Davies hit the post. The striker then forced a good save from Heaton.

There was a fantastic atmosphere inside Oakwell throughout the game as the fans appreciated their side's tremendous efforts.
