Half a dozen feathered friends have flown into Wigfield Farm from the former Thurlstone Owl Sanctuary.

The birds were kept at the Manchester Road aviary founded by 'owl man' Geoff Mottram, which closed following his death last June.

Geoff, 75, devoted his life to rescuing hundreds of owls, giving them a new home in his back garden before releasing healthy ones back into the wild.

Widow Margaret, who decided to shut the sanctuary following her husband's death, said: "All I was bothered about was that they were going to be looked after. When Geoff was dying he said: 'I don't think you'll be able to carry on without me'."

Gemma Pattison, from Wigfield Farm, said: "It's good for the public to see them - not many places have animals like these."
