TWO THIEVES were caught trying to steal items from a Barnsley primary school.

The men had broken into Summer Lane Primary at about 11.40pm on June 11.

Headteacher Rob Smith said they had taken a few smaller items and were in the process of taking a larger item, but would not confirm what those items were.

He said: "The police were very quick on the scene and were very thorough.

"They responded brilliantly and did an amazing job, thanks to a member of the public who phoned them up after they (the thieves) were spotted climbing over a wall."

He said there had been some damage to two windows, which would need replacing.

"It's a shame because instead of spending that money on the children, we're having to spend it on replacing windows. It's got a direct effect on their education."

A spokesman for the police said two men had pleaded guilty to burglary at Barnsley Magistrates' Court last Friday.

Andrew Burnett, 33, of no fixed address and Gary McManus, 34, of Doncaster Road, Measbrough Dyke, will be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on July 4.
