PLANS for an £18,000 refurbishment of Penistone's public toilets have been blasted as a load of rubbish by the town's deputy mayor.
Penistone Town Council has agreed to gut the existing facilities, which include separate men's and women's toilets, and install a single pay-to-use unisex toilet, with room to put in a second one at a later date.
But Harry Barron, the only town councillor to oppose the project, said he would rather see the toilets, on Market Place, stay as they are.
"We have duty to the public as a council to make sure any project we take on benefits the public. This load of rubbish falls far short of that."If we use this Penistone Town Council will become a laughing stock and deservedly so."
The town council took over the lease of the toilets from Barnsley Council in November. The new facilities, which will cost 20p to use, will include baby-changing facilities and disabled access.
Funding for the project includes £8,000 from ISG Pearce, the company which built Tesco, and £10,000 of town council money.
