A NURSERY is thought to be the first in Barnsley to gain a top accolade for its training in specialist first aid for toddlers and young children.

Silkstone Pre School has achieved the Millie’s Mark Gold Standard in paediatric first aid accreditation. The scheme is named in honour of a nine-month-old Millie Thompson who died after choking at nursery five years ago.

“It’s the gold standard in paediatric first aid,” said manager Kathryn Goulding.

“Every member of staff is first aid trained, which is something we’re very proud of. Not all settings have every member of staff trained.

“We’ve checked and we think we’re the first nursery in Barnsley to gain this accreditation.”

Millie’s parents, Dan and Joanne Thompson, founded Millie’s Trust and have successfully campaigned for changes to first aid requirements for childcare providers.
