Police are appealing for witnesses after the Vauxhall Astra was towed away from the A61 between Westwood New Road and junction 36 of the M1 during daylight hours on September 11.
PC Craig Sumpter, of Hoyland safer neighbourhood team, said no houses overlooked the road but people may have seen something while driving past.
"It's not something that looks suspicious at the time but this might trigger someone's memory," he said.
