BARNSLEY'S Open Market will be relocated into the town centre's main shopping precinct in readiness for the £41m redevelopment of the town centre.
The outdoor stalls will move on a temporary basis, likely at least three years, to allow work to start on demolishing Central Offices, the block with multicoloured windows which towers above the market.
There will be 40 fixed stalls running from Peel Square by the steps to the underground toilets, through to Queen Street, into May Day Green and Cheapside, where they will stretch as far as the WH Smith and the O2 store.
The plinth in Peel Square and the 'mushroom' seating canopy in Cheapside will be removed to make space for the stalls and allow emergency vehicles to get between them.
A new outdoor market square is due to be created once central offices is demolished, and the indoor market building is to be refurbished to bring it up to modern standards.
The council is now holding a consultation and wants to take views from traders and shoppers about the plans.
