WORK to refurbish a number of town centre streets begins on Monday.

North Midland Construction PLC is carrying out the £1.2 million works which will see improvements made to Eldon Street; Regent Street South; Hanson Street; Royal Street; Regent Street; Eastgate; Market Hill and a Church Street footpath.

It is part of Barnsley Council's wider plans to 'invigorate' the town centre and includes paving in natural Yorkstone and granite, new street lighting and new street furniture. Roads will also be resurfaced and improved crossings provided.

The works will last about 11 months and access to properties and businesses will be maintained throughout, although this may be restricted at times as work is carried out across business frontages.
