TRAVELLERS have left a costly mess at a site in Darfield with Barnsley Council likely to have to pay hundreds of pounds to clean up.

The travellers based themselves at the children's play area on Doncaster Road last week before departing on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Coun Brian Key said that their time spent in Darfield has left a mark.

He said: "They were served notice and moved on when they were supposed to. The travellers broke the gate down so that will have to be fixed.

"There is I believe hundreds of pounds worth of damage that is now the council's responsibility to clean up. I think they came for a local event and left after that."
