ARTWORK from Barnsley Central Library will no longer be sold at auction as planned following a U-turn by the council.

It had advertised for an auctioneer to assist in the sale of more than 160 pieces of art from the Shambles Street library but this plan has now been shelved, the Chronicle can reveal.

A council spokeswoman said: "The council has decided not to proceed with an auction of the collection of paintings that formed a picture loan service."

However, she couldn't say why council officials had changed their mind.

The collection has been in storage since 2007 and apart from a few being used in the cafe area of the central library, there has not been space for the rest to be on display, she added.
