A Wath man who was shot in a 'targeted attack' was given a bravery award for helping a woman who was killed.
Tyrone Woodhead, 42, of Doncaster Road, suffered life-threatening injuries after he was shot last Thursday.
Police believe the attack was targeted, but are still investigating.
Doncaster Road was closed this morning as the fire service investigated a fire at domestic garages near Mr Woodhead's home.
Mr Woodhead risked his life in 2006, in an attempt to save a woman who was being attacked by her ex-partner.
Mr Woodhead helped restrain the man until police arrived, but the woman later died.
A good friend of Mr Woodhead's said he was a loving family man who doted on his teenage daughter, Shannon.
She said she had been in contact with Shannon, who she believes was in the house at the time of the shooting.
She added: "I don't know how she's coping. She sends messages, but isn't allowed to say anything. She was at the hospital with him."
She said she had known Mr Woodhead and his family for about ten years and still sees them regularly.
She said: "He's the loveliest guy you could meet. He's a family man and lives for his wife and his daughter. They go motorbike racing most weekends.
"He's not a nasty man. He's not a thug or a criminal, he's a local hero.
"I'm dumbfounded, it's a bit of a shock. I'm just hoping he pulls through."
