A grandmother who campaigned to save an ancient Monk Bretton monument has died after "a dignified and brave" fight with pancreatic cancer.

Sadie Ellis Cushing, 75, of High Street, Monk Bretton, campaigned to save the butter cross, the Monk Bretton preaching stone, which was damaged by heavy vehicles 'clipping' it as they manouevred past.

By 2011, not only had the cross received considerable funding but through Mrs Cushing's lobbying the council widened the road and created a traffic island to protect it.

The funeral is at 2pm on Monday September 15 at St Paul's church, Monk Bretton, and afterwards at 3pm at Ardsley Crematorium.
