Penistone councillor Robert Barnard is warning residents to be wary of a council tax scam.
Coun Barnard said a number of homeowners had contacted him because they were receiving telephone calls from people claiming to be part of the council and offering to reduce council tax bands.
He said he was keen to remind residents that council tax bands are dealt with by the Valuation Office Agency — an executive agency of Revenue and Customs — and not Barnsley Council.
Coun Barnard said: “Various people call offering to get the home owner’s council tax reduced and charge for the privilege — even if they’re not successful.”
He added: “There is a clear warning on the VOA website about this.”
