ONE of the town centre’s longest-established retailers WH Smith closed its doors for the last time this week ending a presence of more than 110 years in the town centre.

WH Smith is among more than 20 retailers on Cheapside and May Day Green which have had to leave the Metropolitan Centre to make way for its refurbishment as part of the Better Barnsley regeneration scheme.

Its shutters came down at 2pm on Tuesday.

One upset worker who asked not to be identified told the Chronicle: “I’m so angry and disgusted with WH Smiths, and the council, for not getting their backsides into gear and sorting this out.”
