A WIDOWER was presented with a rare Manchester United watch similar to one given to him by his late wife which was stolen by burglars.
Christopher Dutton, 63, of Worsbrough, was left terrified after two burglars broke into his home early on January 25 and forced him to sit down as they ransacked his house.
They made off with the limited edition watch, his wedding ring and £3 in cash.
He reported the burglary to the police and was astonished when DC Louise Little contacted the Manchester club for a replacement.They directed her to suppliers Danbury Mint, which had one left and gave it to Christopher free.
He was presented with the watch by Ch Supt Andy Brooke at Barnsley police station on Wednesday.
Mr Brooke said: "It was a particularly nasty burglary - as soon burglars are disturbed they normally run off but they made him sit there as they went through his house.
"He was terrified and said he kept thinking about stories where burglars had beaten up elderly people.
"I was delighted to present the watch to Mr Dutton. It's not the same watch given to him by his wife, but it's something that means a lot to him."
Christopher said the actions of the police officers involved had restored his faith in humanity. Enquiries into the burglary are ongoing.
