The first findings of the Wombwell Heritage Group's World War 1 project have been put on display.

The display was on show at a community event held at the town's Operatic Society centre.

The first story is that of Private Joseph Parsons.

He wrote a letter home to Myers Street in 1914 talking about his new job as a bomb thrower.

Joseph, who was in the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment, was awarded a Croix de Guerre, a medal awarded by the French to foreign allies, similar to being mentioned in despatches.

He was eventually killed on the Western Front.

Mary Taylor, from the Society, has been looking through newspaper articles of the time to piece together more stories from soldiers from Wombwell and the surrounding area.
