A YOUNG boy battling a rare type of cancer will have his birthday wish of visiting Legoland and Harry Potter World granted thanks to the generosity of family and friends.
Ryan Mallinder, who has learning disabilities, had asked for the trips for his 13th birthday which was on April 22.
He is fighting a rare type of bone cancer called Ewing's sarcoma and is undergoing chemotherapy.
The money was raised at a charity night at Carlton WMC.
Mum Jill, 43, of Bramah Street, Carlton, said: "Ryan likes Lego and he loves computer games and his DVDs. He's a big Harry Potter fan.
"He was shocked when he was presented on stage with the tickets for Legoland but he's really looking forward to it."
He was diagnosed in November 2011 after complaining of pains in his knee. After originally being told they were growing pains, it was discovered Ryan had a tumour the size of a grapefruit on his pelvis and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy before having an operation to remove what was left of it.
He had been in remission since November 2012 but the cancer has now spread to his lungs and he is on another course of chemotherapy at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
The intense treatment will last 11 months, but Jill added: "It does seem to be working. Ryan had a scan last Tuesday and the tumours are responding well.
"We've just got to keep hoping that it will work - we've just got to keep going and stay positive."
• The charity evening also raised £1,000 for Clic Sargent, a charity which care for children with cancer.
