BARNSLEY Youth Choir returned home from the World Choir Games in Riga 'world champions' after winning one category and coming runner up in another at the world's most prestigious choir competition.

The choir returned from the five day trip to the Latvian capital on Sunday, with the highest golden diploma in the pop section open category, and being 0.4 of a mark away from first place in the gospel category too.

Conductor Mat Wright said the competition proved just how good BYC is.

"I know they're good, but I can't be a fair judge of just how brilliant they are. To get two gold diplomas from the judges is just incredible.

"Every single person in the choir has worked so hard for this, and has dedicated so much time to attending rehearsals and practising at home.

"We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the people who donated towards the trip, their support has been amazing."

The Chronicle sent reporter Alison Burkinshaw to Latvia with the choir. Read her special report in Friday's paper.
