When published in 1988, The Making of Barnsley was the first published history of the town since Victorian times, focusing on the ‘pre-industrial’ period, but with an eye on the present day. In this edition, new sources provide insight into forgotten subjects such as medical care, trades and early industries. It also shows us that crime and punishment were an integral part of social history.
