HERITAGE sites including protected listed buildings and environmental sites in the Dearne Valley could benefit from just under £1.9m of lottery funding.

A grant application and five-year action plan has been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure funding for the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership - it will see investments in sites across the Dearne including Maurice Dobson Museum in Darfield and Hoyland Lowe Stand.

Also included are archaeological investigations into areas across the Dearne, along with improved signage and directions to places of interest, a programme of guided walks.

Coun Roy Miller, spokesman for development and environment, said: "The partnership provides a great opportunity to make more people aware of what a great area the Dearne Valley is. It has medieval buildings, listed industrial buildings, unexpected wildlife, surprising views and enthusiastic communities."

The lottery is expected to make a decision on the successful applicants in June.
