A LIFELONG Grimethorpe resident celebrated her 100th birthday this week.

Rene Jeffels, of Greenbank Walk, had a surprise party at the Welfare Hall in the village on Wednesday afternoon.

Rene, who has a daughter, Josephine, a grandson and two great-grandchildren, worked as a baker in Grimethorpe until her retirement four decades ago.

“I’ve lived in Grimethorpe all my life and I enjoy my independence,” she said. “I go to the Welfare Hall luncheon twice a week and although 100 is a big age, I have no plans to stop anytime soon.”
