SHOPPERS will be able to take a first look inside the new Glass Works complex when the meat and fish market opens next Friday.

Six existing meat and fish traders will be moving in, with a formal opening ceremony taking place on Saturday September 1 involved the Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Steve Green, and the council leader, Coun Sir Steve Houghton.

The market’s current food traders that will be making the move on Friday will include Barkers Butchers, Keith’s Quality Meats, Morley Meats, Tom Hall Fishmonger, Joseph Cliffe Fishmonger and Deli Butcher.

The temporary markets will remain open until the end of October with the non-food traders moving into the Glass Works on Saturday November 3.

Market trader Barrie Bennett from the Deli Butcher stall said: “My new stall in Barnsley Markets is double the size, allowing me to add new products and more variation for our shoppers.”

“I am delighted that Barnsley Council are upgrading the market and taking us into a 21st century facility.

“I truly believe it will be the best market around and everything about it is spot on.

“Keeping us in the same location and giving us six days to trade was very important and I am now hugely excited about the future.”
