POLICE were called to Barnsley College after reports were received that a student was carrying a firearm.

Officers attended Old Mill Lane at 12.20pm yesterday after a student contacted police alleging that another student had what they believed to be a firearm.

A male student was detained but police said he was found not to be in possession of a firearm, or any weapon.

Chris Webb, principal of Barnsley College, said the college had remained safe throughout the incident and was not on ‘lock down’ at any point.

“We understand that the incident was upsetting for both staff and students,” he said. “I am proud of the college’s response to the matter and the prompt support of the police.

“I am pleased that everyone is safe and the incident is now over. The college will fully co-operate with the police and their ongoing investigation.”
