CELEBRATIONS will be taking place to mark ten years since The Civic re-opened its doors.

A huge garden party is planned to mark the occasion with a number of different events taking place over the autumn period from exhibitions, to pop-up events, with a day-long garden party to end the celebrations.

“Autumn 2019 sees the Civic reaching its tenth anniversary, so we’re celebrating with a very special garden party,” said Jason White, community engagement officer at the Civic.

“It will be an exciting free family day out showcasing high quality performances and fun activities for young and old.”

The garden party will include a tickertape parade from Fantabulosa, performances by Pif-Paf and Zest, cabaret acts, clowning and circus performances with gravity defying feats.

The centrepiece for the celebration is a major multi-media exhibition called North: Fashioning Identity at the Civic - which will feature more than 100 photographers, fashion garments and artwork from a host of renowned photographers, designers and artists from across the north.

Head of visual arts and engagemanet and the Civic, David Sinclair, said: “Straight-talk, true grit and a sense of community are all traits often associated with northern identity but we want to explore beyond the stereotypes and ask what northern identity means today.

“This promises to be a fascinating reflection of what it means to be northern. Northern style and culture - its music, film, sport, fashion, landscapes and communities - has a truly national and international resonance and impact.”

On Saturday, September 14, at 10.30am, Major Edward Edmund and Lance Corporal Henry Hilary - who are two Victorian gentlemen explorers dressed in tropical kit, will take audiences on an entertaining exploration of the Civic’s garden party.

Throughout the day there will be a rock painting workshop, a theatre troupe performance, an inspiring one-man show, a parade from the UK’s leading drag acts, a clown show and much more.

Steve Brown, the managing director of Highlander Computing Solutions, which is the sponsor of the event, said: “We are proud to sponsor the Civic, and help them celebrate their tenth anniversary.

“The Civic have been a loyal customer of ours for the past six years and over that time we have developed an excellent ongoing relationship built on trust and mutual benefit.”
