A 90-YEAR OLD man celebrated his birthday by walking eight miles with his walking group.

Alan Lamb, of Park View, Royston, has been part of the Royston Walking Group since it was founded 18 years ago.

He, alongside other mature walkers, meet every Tuesday at Royston Village Hall car park and walk between eight and ten miles together.

Alan, a retired welder, believes that walking is the key to living a long life and was delighted when he was surprised on Tuesday with presents to celebrate his birthday and being the oldest member of the club.

“I’ve been walking for many years and I really enjoy it. It’s not just about walking, it’s spending time together with other mature people and keeping active.

“We always walk at a steady pace to accommodate those who can’t walk as fast and it’s not a race. Unless it’s raining, we always go for a walk every Tuesday.

“It was walking that brought me to Barnsley from Newcastle upon Tyne 18 years ago and I really love it here. The people are wonderful.

“I do believe that walking and socialising is the secret to long life. I enjoy it ever so much. When I’m not with the group I walk my neighbour’s dog around Royston Park. It keeps me active and I love it. I don’t intend on stopping.”
