A MAN has appeared in court following the death of a two-month-old baby.

Anton Shields, 37, of Hardwick Court, Barnsley, appeared at Derby Crown Court charged with murder.

Shields was arrested on June 27 initially charged with with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent.

The baby, Cody Aaron Peter Shields-Holman, was airlifted to hospital after paramedics were called to an address in Derbyshire where he was found to have serious head injuries.

He was taken to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital but died two days later.

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Chesterfield Coroners' Court on July 8 pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Shields has been remanded into custody and will appear at Derby Crown Court on August 27. A provisional trial date has been set for October 2.
